Louise Marie Martin was born in Wabash Indiana on May 19, 1933, the daughter of George and Rose Mary (Brosnan) Martin. She was a member of St. Bernard’s in Wabash, Indiana at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tipton on September 7, 1948. She received the name Sister Maureen at her reception on July 2, 1949. She pronounced first vows on July 2, 1951 and final vows on August 15, 1957. Sister Maureen attended St. Joseph Academy, Tipton, and then St. Joseph Junior College. She began teaching right out of high school and especially loved teaching kindergarten. She continued her education at St. Mary’s Notre Dame Catholic University and St. Meinrad Benedictine monastery. For more than 20 years she taught in various Catholic schools. She also worked in a homeless shelter and volunteered with the American Red Cross. When her mother became ill she returned to Wabash to care for her the last 8 years of her mother’s life. In 1988 Sr. Maureen made her home in Mason, Michigan, where she served the elderly in her complex apartment while engaged in several ministries at St. James Parish, Mason, including sacristan, CCD and as a member of the choir. As her health declined, she moved to Kalamazoo and joined the sisters of Nazareth Center. Sister Maureen had a simplicity about her and often displayed her sparkling smile to her sisters, family and friends whom she dearly loved. She had a keen memory and enjoyed recalling past events. She will be especially remembered for her prayerful dedication to Pro-Life Movement and great concern for all God’s little ones. A Vigil Service will be held Thursday at 7pm in the Holy Family Chapel where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Friday at 10:30am.
