Joan was a member of St. Elizabeth Church in Wyandotte at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on July 1, 1948. She received the name Sister Ruth Bernard at her reception on January 3, 1949, but later returned to her Baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on January 3, 1951 and final vows on January 3, 1954. Sister Joan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Nazareth College in 1963. She continued Graduate Studies at Western Michigan University with a major in Education. She spent her first 13 years teaching at various schools in the Congregation including St. John Vianney in Flint, St. Catherine, St. David, and St. Margaret in Detroit. Sister Joan then accepted a position as Registrar at Nazareth College from 1965-1975. She later also served as Pastoral Care Minister at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo. From the late 1970’s to 2007 Sr Joan continued her Pastoral Care Ministry with the Sisters of Presentation in San Francisco. She returned to Nazareth in July, 2007 when she became the Nazareth Center Bookkeeper and then served as a Spiritual Care Advisor at Borgess Nursing Home. Sister Joan loved life and loved people. After recovering from a stroke, she moved to Nazareth Center and later to Ascension Borgess Place. She loved to go on outings and was generous in sharing her “finds” with others. Always working to bring joy to those around her, she had a gentle wit and ability to share her stories with humor. One could always count on her to liven up any conversation. Her inclusivity would engage all around her in whatever activity she was involved. May she now find herself welcomed with joy into the communion of saints. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by live stream from Holy Family Chapel 10 am Wednesday September 7, 2022. Interment of Cremated remains will be at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregation of St. Joseph2929 Nazareth Rd Kalamazoo, MI 49048.
