Richard Anthony Shane, 67, of Bellevue, died Thursday, July 29, 2021, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 14, 1953, in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of Robert A. and Martha J. (Mak) Shane. He grew up in Portage, where he attended St. Monica Elementary School in Kalamazoo and later graduated from Portage Central High School in 1971. He worked for several years at Romence Garden Center, served honorably in the U.S. Air Force and worked and retired in Ionia from the Michigan Department of Corrections. He was an avid pilot and cat lover. He attended the Latin Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a sister, Ann Marie (Otto) Kreuzer, of Kalamazoo, and four brothers, Robert M. (Mary) Shane of Portage, Marion R. Shane of Bronson, David J. (Lorie) Shane of Midland, and Thomas P. Shane of Stevensville. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church , 939 Charlotte Ave., at 10:30 AM on Monday August 9th. Father Jose Haro, celebrant. Burial will be in Portage Central Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. We have loved him in life; let us not forget him in death, but rather follow and assist him with our prayers.
