Peter James Mallett, 54, of Kalamazoo passed away Wednesday December 22, 2021 at Ascension Borgess Hospital. Peter was born on November 25, 1967 in Scituate, Rhode Island. The son of Stephen and Ann Marie (St. George) Mallett. His family later moved to East Longmeadow, MA. where after graduating from High School, he enlisted in the US Navy. After completing boot camp in San Diego, CA. Peter was stationed in Toledo, Ohio. He was not thrilled with that duty station and shared his displeasure with his mother. He recalled her reply as you can do anything for a short time, and you could possibly meet the love of your life and future wife in Toledo. He did, and on June 23, 1990 in Rossford, Ohio, Peter was united in marriage to the former Cecilia Vedra who survives. He served during Operation Desert Shield and for a total of ten years. They enjoyed several reassignments during his career, settling in Kalamazoo, MI when his active duty service ended. Pete’s biggest treasures were his children, Mathew Ryan and Lauren Elise. He beamed with pride sharing news about them to everyone. If you knew Peter, you knew of his empathetic nature and willingness to help others. He loved to sit outside in his rocking chair for hours, reading and greeting everyone who walked by. He was passionate about supporting his family, whether that be coaching little league baseball or showing up for every golf and tennis match ready to cheer. Peter was a devout Catholic, encouraging all those around him to explore their faith. He was a Eucharistic minister, volunteered at Neuman’s Catholic Bookstore, and taught Confirmation classes alongside his wife. Peter was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and attended both St. Joseph Church and St. Augustine Cathedral. In his free time, Peter enjoyed golfing, belonged to the Knights of Columbus, was a job mentor in Parchment, and never let an opportunity to thank a veteran pass him by. Peter had an ability to connect with anyone. His gentle nature, and encouraging smile will be greatly missed. Also surviving are his mother Ann-Marie (Mallett) and Paul Reuter; step-mother, Therese Mallett; three siblings, Michael (Edith) Mallett, Linda (Michael) Romejko, Michelle (Michael) McBride; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Stephen Mallett, Step- Father Andre Jean and father in-law William Vedra. Friends and family will be received 5-8 pm Tuesday December 28, 2021 at Parchment Redmond Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm.
