Marjorie A. Sherwood, 92, of Kalamazoo, passed away Friday, February 7, 2025 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. She was born June 30, 1932, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Francis and Margaret (Weber) Foley. Marge was a 1950 graduate of St. Augustine High School, and went to work in the accounting department at Borgess Hospital after graduation. On July 18, 1953, at St. Mary Parish in Kalamazoo, Marge was united in marriage to Foster Sherwood. She later worked at WMU in the financial aid office, retiring after 15 years.
Marge centered her life on family and faith. Marge was part of the Tuesday Rosary/Mass and luncheon group and volunteered at the St. Augustine food pantry for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had a caring and loving embrace for all her family, friends and even strangers she met. Her lifelong interest in books, magazines and reading kept her occupied and informed on a myriad of subjects. Her love of literature extended to being a patron of the bookmobile and being instrumental in establishing the Parchment Library. She passed along her love of reading to all her children. She was well versed in history and biographies, always receptive to conversations on most any topic.
Her interest in crochet and travel also kept her engaged. She and Foster made multiple trips to Florida each spring, and expanded their interest in history with visits to Williamsburg, Virginia. In later years her passion for travel took her to Cancun, Mexico seeing the historical Mayan Talum ruins. Travels in the United States extended from the east coast, to St. Augustine Florida, to Branson Missouri, to the Southwest, and nearby Wisconsin Dells. Marge enjoyed history in many of these locations, seeing the Wright Brothers site at Kitty Hawk, walking tours of Charleston and Savannah, the Biltmore, walking the streets of America’s oldest city in the United States, and driving through Navajo country and the Petrified Forest. Her experiences with home tours in Marshal and Grand Rapids rounded out her understanding of local history. She relished every opportunity to experience all these adventures.
Marge had very close relationships with several of her cousins. She and her cousin Bruce had breakfast together each week for many years. She also maintained daily contact with her cousin Marilyn. She was also close to her cousin Jane and considered her a sister. In all of these connections she was always totally engaged in wanting to know how others were doing and sharing her thoughts and recent experiences.
Marge is survived by four children, Diane (Doug Pearson) Bourgeois, Michael Sherwood, Kathleen (Sue Cathcart) Sherwood and Susan (Mark Fortier) Standish; four grandchildren, Marc (Nicolle) Sherwood, Kevin (Coty Dunten) Bourgeois, Brian (Kristine) Bourgeois and Isaac (Jaclyn Schlang) Standish; four great grandchildren, Molly Sherwood, Nathan Sherwood, Foster Standish and Winter Standish; and sisters-in-law, Patricia Foley and Emilie (Leslie) Wright. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Foster, and her brother, Francis Foley, Jr.
