Maria, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away November 3, 2021, at the age of 90 following a brief illness. She was born on July 1, 1931 in Wanssum, the Netherlands, to Pieter Jan and Hendrika (Reijnders) Kunen. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church for many years and, more recently, St. Thomas More Catholic Church. On September 19, 1961, in Geysteren, Maria was united in marriage to Jan van den Hombergh, who preceded her in death in November 2020. Maria had the Dutch touch when it came to her flowers, which adorned the family home for nearly 60 years. The brilliant and beautiful colors of her many flowers jumped out at and amazed everyone who approached the house. They were worthy of the cover of a magazine. Maria’s cooking and baking skills were unparalleled, with friends, family members, and acquaintances clamoring for her Oliebollen every Christmas and New Years. Maria was warm, friendly, generous, and kind to others and was loved in return. She was a homemaker and raised four sons, John (Sherri), Tony (Beth), Robert, and Peter van den Hombergh, all of whom survive. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Max, Jacob, Jackie, Joseph, and Sidney van den Hombergh along with numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and the Netherlands. Maria was preceded in death by all of her sisters and brothers. A visitation is planned for Sunday, November 7th, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Redmond Funeral Home in Kalamazoo, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Monday, November 8th, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society.
