Lois Jane Newbury

January 25, 1925 — February 17, 2019

Lois Jane Newbury passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Laurels of Galesburg on Sunday, February 17, at the age of 94. She was born January 25, 1925, to Delena (DuCharme) and Henry J. TenBusschen in Kalamazoo. She grew up in Parchment, Michigan, and attended Kalamazoo Central High School. She was surrounded by a large loving family as a child, having two sisters and a brother, with her grandparents living next door and her aunt and cousins living two houses away on the same street. She was especially proud of her great-uncle, Albert TenBusschen, who was the Kalamazoo City Manager while she was a child. Lois met her husband, Edward Newbury, while he was with the Army at Fort Custer in Battle Creek.  They were united in marriage on December 23, 1943, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was stationed at that time. After the war, they moved back to Pennsylvania where Ed’s family lived and then to Kalamazoo where they spent the rest of their lives raising their three children: Ellie (Peter) Krawutschke, Edward J. Newbury, and Laurie (Elbert) Herbert.  Lois was a homemaker known for her kind and generous disposition, always willing to help anyone in need. Her family remembers her best as a wonderful cook who, fortunately, passed on some of  her delicious recipes to her granddaughters and great granddaughters. She was very active in all aspects of her children’s lives both at school and in their various other activities, serving as a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, bible school teacher at Parchment Methodist Church, and in the numerous activities of the PTA and Mothers’ Club. She spent many hours ice skating, roller skating, and biking with the children when they were young. She especially enjoyed the family’s many car trips out east. She didn’t learn to drive until she was 35, but once she got her license, she was exhilarated by the freedom it gave her and loved driving her children and their friends around. Lois was preceded in death by her husband on February 24, 2010. She was also predeceased by her parents, her son, Eddie, her brother, John TenBusschen, and her sister Virginia Dubnicka. Surviving are her younger sister, Delena Belonga, her daughters, Ellie and Laurie, five grandchildren, David (Shante) Newbury, Sonita (Drew) Schau, Jennifer (John) Daniels, Elizabeth Herbert, and Alison Herbert. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren: Kali Newbury. Colby and Kendall Schau, and Katharine, Rosalie, and Annabelle Daniels. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 2:00 at Parchment Redmond Funeral Home, 2300 East "G" Ave. Parchment,  MI 49004 (269) 349-7735 burial will be alongside her husband in Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date. www.redmondfuneralhomes.net
