Laverne Rose Ring, of Portage, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Brookdale of Portage. Born December 27, 1924 in Escanaba, MI daughter of the late George and Jennie (Martel) Hurley. Laverne attended Escanaba High School and then started working for Michigan Bell. On October 23, 1948, Laverne married Robert Ring, who preceded her in death on July 5, 2009. They settled in Marquette MI to raise their family. She also opened up her home to take care of foster children and many others that needed a place to stay. After retirement, Laverne and Robert moved to Port Richey, Florida and then to Kalamazoo to be near their children. Laverne and Robert loved to spend time with their children, especially during the summer in the U.P. She was famous for her coffee cakes she made during the Christmas season. They have become a family and friend tradition. She was known by many for her quick wit and sassiness. She is survived by her six children, Donna Ring of Kalamazoo, MI, Rosalie (Thomas) Paccione of Estero, FL, Paul (Judy) Ring of Holland, MI, Thomas (Sharon) Ring of Concord, CA, Jane Ring of Portage, MI, Margie Ring of East Lansing, MI; three sisters, Margie Hurley, Donna (John) Nelson, Mary Martin; 12 grandchildren, Sarah and Thomas Paccione, JD and Troy Ring, Nicole, Kristen, Megan and Kelly Ring, Alexis and Nathan Von Deak, Leah Ring, and Julia Ring; and 10 great grandchildren. Honoring Laverne’s request, cremation has taken place. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Legion.
