Joyce M. Hawkins 89 of Kalamazoo passed away on May 10, 2020 at home. Joyce was born on December 21, 1930 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Lester and Ruth (Comstock) Newbre. She retired as an inspector at the Upjohn Company and enjoyed mushrooming, gardening, playing Yahtzee and table games with her family, occasional trips to the casino and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joyce was the official pie and "nuts and bolts chex mix" baker for all holiday gatherings. On March 19, 1955 in Kalamazoo she was united in marriage to John Hawkins who preceded her in death on August 10, 2008. Also preceding her in death were one daughter Jean (Hawkins) Churchill, three brothers, Alton, Fred and Lynn Newbre; two sisters, Elaine Otto, and May Hatfield. Surviving are two children, John (Sherri) Hawkins II of Gladwin, and Leslie (Hawkins) Kuhtic of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren, Katie (Adam) Mccausland, Amy Churchill, John (Danielle) Hawkins, Nicholas (Ashlee) Kuhtic, James Hawkins, and Alisha Kuhtic; four great-grandchildren, Lila and Jacob McCausland, and Ella and Avery Kuhtic; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lawton on Friday, May 15, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan. Arrangements made by Redmond Funeral Home Kalamazoo.
