John A. McManus

John A. McManus, 77, of Vicksburg, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. John was born December 1, 1946 in Kalamazoo, the son of Emmett and Nadine (Mann) McManus. John graduated from Loy Norrix High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Western Michigan University. He also served in the United States Marines in the Vietnam War. John was a dedicated educator for Kalamazoo Public Schools at Loy Norrix High School until his retirement. He was a resident of Kalamazoo’s west side until he moved to Vicksburg. He was a loyal patron of Yogi’s (Table 17) and was member of the Vicksburg chapter of A.A.

John is survived by two children, Shannon (Gordie) McManus-Bowers and Shane (Iris) McManus; three grandchildren, Kaileb, CallieBea and Meaghan Bowers; five siblings, Sharon Siwik, Walter McManus, Maureen McManus-Green, Rosemarie (Bill) McManus-Scamerhorn and Dan (Susan) McManus; 37 nieces and nephews; long-time close family friend, Terry Dorgan and the Dorgan family; his many friends from Vicksburg A.A.; and his beloved dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen (Daily) McManus in 2019, his son, Kevin McManus in 2011, and two siblings, Colleen Hopkins and Michael McManus.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 12 Noon at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1628 E. G Avenue, Parchment, MI 49004. Visitation will be held at the church from 11 AM until the time of Mass at 12 Noon. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall. John will be laid to rest with full military honors on Monday in a private ceremony at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be directed to the Battle Creek Veteran’s Administration Recreation Therapy Program.
