Eugene Ivan Bunker

July 8, 1926 — June 21, 2018

Eugene Ivan Bunker was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on July 8, 1926 and left this life to be with the Lord again on June 21, 2018. He spent his childhood exploring the outdoors and forming the solid foundation of his Catholic faith. As a young adult he joined the Army and served his country in several locations overseas during WWII. Gene retired as a Teamster after having driven long haul trucks for over 30 years. During that time, Gene became the proud father of four children, Kathy (Texas), Jim (Kalamazoo), Diane (Kalamazoo), and Terry (who preceded him in death). His wife, Dora Bunker, also preceded him in death. He leaves behind his children and special friend and caregiver, Sheryl Mezo. Gene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and counted many of the parishioners as his dear friends. He especially enjoyed visits from Monsignor Mike Hazard, Deacon John Ryder, and Father Andrew Raczkowski. In September 2016 Gene was selected to go on a Talons Out Honor Flight that flew he and 75 other veterans to Washighton D.C. for the day to see the memorials built in their honor and be feted in the manner they so greatly deserved for their sacrificial service. He counted that as one of the best days of his later years, along with a trip for Mass at the Basilica of Notre Dame and a private tour of the grounds. Gene had an unprecedented access to a number of places on campus and especially enjoyed the Basilica Choir, the Grotto, and the Golden Dome. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated July 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial in Ft. Custer Cemetery will immediately follow Mass. Memorial contributions can be made to Talons Out Honor Flight, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or Hospice Care of SouthWest Michigan.
