Dr. Edward John Hartmann, Jr.

Edward J. Hartmann, Jr. a long time resident of Kalamazoo passed away on 2/5.2024 at age 95. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Catherine V. (Kolberg) and Edward John Hartmann Sr. the oldest of twelve children. After the family moved to a blueberry farm near Lacota, MI in his teens, he finished high school at South Haven High School and went on to Western Michigan University and then the University of Michigan School of  Dentistry. It was at WMU where Ed met Marjorie Elizabeth “Betty” Hansen of Titusville, NJ. They were married for 67 years until she passed in 2018. Except for 2 years serving in the Army Dental Corps they lived in Kalamazoo, MI where he practiced dentistry for 38 years. He and Betty raised six children in Kalamazoo Barbara, Mary, Stephen, Donald, Paul and Mark. They enjoyed many years with their 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Ed led a very active life professionally and personally. He was a very well respected Dentist in Kalamazoo serving as the president of the Kalamazoo Valley Dental Society and receiving the Edgar A. Honey award for the highest professional standards. He was active in the Catholic Church at St. Augustine and St. Catherine’s and the schools St. Augustine’s, Barbour Hall and Hackett Catholic Central that his children attended. Ed and Betty were both honored with the Bishops Award for their contributions to the Catholic Schools of Kalamazoo A life long avid golfer, it became his second career after he retired. He joined the Hackett golf team as a volunteer coach and spent 20 years coaching the boys and girls team. He was named and AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002 and selected to the Hackett Catholic Central Athletic Hall of fame in 2006. He loved spending time at the cottage the family built and used for many years. Many hours hunting deer and fishing there as well as trips to Canada and out west with friend for fishing and beautiful fall days hunting pheasant on the blueberry farms with brother Pat and his sons. He was advocate of regular exercise and belonged to the YMCA for many years taking his children regularly as they grew up. He turned to swimming which became a daily event after he retired. He also spent many years involved with Boy Scouts with his sons. Of his 11 siblings he was preceded in death by Pat, Rosemary, Tom, David, Margie and Rita. He is survived by John, Cathy, James, Betty and Marie. He was very supportive of his siblings and their many offspring. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Hartmann-Cooley fund at Hackett Catholic Prep or the Orton Dyslexia Society. He made such an impact on this world. He will be missed by all his family, friends and patients. Friends will be received 4-7 pm Tuesday February 13, 2024 at Redmond Funeral Home, Kalamazoo. A celebration of Ed's life will be celebrated June 1, 2024 at the family home. Interment will be in Portage Central Cemetery.
