Carol Ann Heflin, age 67, died peacefully on March 15, 2022 after a brief, yet courageous, fight against an aggressive form of cancer. The youngest of five children, Carol was born to John and Marie Rusnock on November 24th, 1954 in Indiana. Carol was a woman of many passions. She spent her life as a champion of social justice and was always fighting for the marginalized and forgotten. She often showed her love for others by feeding them, which led her to open and operate a restaurant for many years in Dowagiac, Mi. Additionally, she took on the role of Chair of the Kalamazoo Democratic Party to help facilitate meaningful change in her community. While all of these roles were important, she had no greater passion than being a grandmother. She was never happier than when she was surrounded by the love of her grandkids while eating ice cream or having dance parties. Carol is survived by her, brother Edward (Carol), sisters Renee (Zbigniew), Janet (Lenard), and Linda (Harold), sons, Dylan (Gina) of Florida, Shawn (Mary) of Ohio, Ryan (Shannon) of Michigan, Ben (Sara) of Idaho, Alex (Carla) of Michigan, and daughter Lynneea (Tyler) of Michigan, along with far too many grandchildren to fit here. She is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, David Joseph Heflin. A celebration of life is scheduled for May 21st from 11-12pm at Overlander Bandshell in Portage, Mi. Extra Parking Available at the Portage City Hall In lieu of flowers, we would encourage a donation to the YWCA Kalamazoo - 353 E Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49007 in Carol's memory.
