Gilbert A. Youngdale of Portage passed away Monday October 10, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Gilbert was born January 15, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Alfred and Caroline (Barram) Youngdale. Gilbert served in the United States Navy during World War II. After returning home, he graduated from University of Detroit Mercy and later received his PhD from Wayne State University also in Detroit. Gilbert was united in marriage to Patricia Kuchan on November 10, 1956. After moving to Portage, Gilbert began working for the Upjohn Company, where he retired from after 30 years of service. During that time he was listed as an inventor on approximately 30 patents. Outside of work, in addition to his quality family time, he enjoyed fishing, puzzles, casino gaming, golfing, tennis, bowling and he was a member of the Detroit Archery Club. In addition to his wife Patricia, also surviving are two daughters, Teresa Youngdale of Portage, MI, Joan (Frederick) Chapman of Marshall, MI; two sons, Curt (Stacey) Youngdale of High Point, NC, Jason Youngdale of Phoenix, AZ; two grandsons, Caleb (Megan Mounsey) Chapman and Silas Chapman. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Slater; two brothers, Richard Youngdale and Ralph Youngdale. A Graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday October 12, 2016, at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
