John David John De Liefde of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the age of 85. Born in Grand Rapids, MI to Helen and Jacob De Liefde, John graduated from South High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Western Michigan University. John was preceded in death by his brothers Jim, Chuck, Rich, and Doug; his son John Jr.; his first love, Jacquelyn Rozenga Paul; and the love of his life, Norma Jean Laug. He is survived by one brother, Larry (Donna) De Liefde of Newaygo, MI; two sisters, Dolores Swanson of Grand Rapids, MI and Helen Svekis of Kalamazoo, MI; and his sister-in-law, Sandy De Liefde of Rockford, MI. John is also survived by five children: Ann De Liefde of Port Orange, FL; Jeanne De Liefde of Kalamazoo, MI; Gay (Rob) Swaine of Redondo Beach, CA; Lisa Stevens of Clearwater, FL; and Joe De Liefde of St. Petersburg, FL. John had seven grandchildren Leigh Marino, Amy Moser, Jamie Willard, Taylor Swaine, Kiley Swaine, Ryan Stevens, Joey De Liefde, and Michael De Liefde; five great grandchildren Austin, Shealyn, Avery, Addyson, and Colbey; many treasured nieces and nephews; his caregivers, Gayle Lorentz, Michelle Davis, and CJ Mazon; and last, but far from least, his beloved dog "Blue." John spent most of his life "way up north" at his home on the Little Manistee River in Luther, Michigan where he was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman, and consummate host to everyone who stopped by. He was loved by many for his easygoing disposition, frank observations, dry wit and quirky expressions. John loved music and poetry, and frequently recited favorite selections such as "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening," "June," and "The Ballad of Sir Patrick Spens." His inventive approach to making and fixing things led to many humorous episodes that are often told and retold by those who knew him. He was truly "a character," unbound by the limits of tradition and convention. For those closest to him, his love of life, sense of wonder, and good-heartedness will be sorely missed. Unforgettable, that's what you are, John. Arrangements by Redmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49008 (269) 343-6156. www.redmondfuneralhomes.net
