Susan Marie Smith

Susan Marie Smith of Parchment, passed away Friday September 6, 2013 at Borgess Medical Center. Susan was born July 3, 1945 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Wendell and Helen (VanZee) Carnes. Sue was a member of Haven Reformed Church, Kalamazoo, and was very compassionate toward people living with disabilities, becoming connected with SHALOM, a Christ-centered ministry serving adults with special needs. Having donated her home to SHALOM 1997 as a way to support women with disabilities, she became their mother, protector, advocate and friend. Many women have benefited from Sue’s kindness and generosity as SHALOM honors the gift of her home through supported living for women with disabilities. Susan is survived by her twin children Matthew Smith formerly of the National Guard now of Lansing and Melinda Smith of Portage; brother, Paul (Betty) Carnes of Buda, TX; 2 sisters, Dorothy (Paul) Diefenbach of Okemos, Linda (Goerge) Boomers of Ash Flat, AR. Friends will be received Tuesday from 1-2 pm at the Parchment-Redmond Funeral Home, 2300 East “G” Ave. Parchment, MI 49004 (269)349-7735. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 3PM at Riverside Cemetery. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 5 PM at Haven Reformed Church.
