Thomas J. (Spicuzza) Spicketts, Jr., 87, passed away September 5, 2013 surrounded by family. He was born May 25, 1926 in Kalamazoo, MI to Thomas J. (Spicuzza) Spicketts Sr. and Anna (Mascari) Spicketts. He married Virginia May (Wilcox) Spicketts on January 24, 1953 and celebrated 58 years together. Their union created 10 children, 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and one “grand dog”, Hazel. After graduation from St. Augustine, Tom proudly served his country during World War II. While en route to Burma, India his boat, the S.S. Peter Silvester, was torpedoed by a German u-boat in the Indian Ocean. He was pulled to safety by Ray Laenen who became a life-long friend. Tom spent three days in a lifeboat before he was rescued and sent to Perth, Australia to recover from the injuries for which he earned a Purple Heart. After his time in the service, Tom in addition to his full time job as a milkman worked part time jobs including janitor and bartender at the K of C. Later he worked at Shafer's Bakery where he retired in 1989, which he considered to be too soon. Tom believed in staying busy and remained active in the community after retirement. He spent many years volunteering at church activities, Red Cross blood drives, Loaves and Fishes and the Gospel Mission. He was always ready to help a neighbor or friend in need by mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, or raking leaves. Always cheerful, when asked how he was doing Tom often gave his famous reply: “If I was doing any better, I would have to charge admission.” Tom enjoyed golfing and was an avid fan of Notre Dame and the Detroit Tigers. He had a beautiful voice and loved to sing, still taking every opportunity to serenade his family in the months before his passing. Tom’s greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Tom was strong in his belief and devotion to God. His faith was a source of strength and guided all of his actions in life. His family draws comfort in knowing he is in heaven with the Lord and those who went before him. His kind heart and gentle demeanor will truly be missed.
