Charlene Stermer

Charlene Stermer passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Charlene was born October 6, 1913 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Charles and Lena (Schantz) Larkin. On January 24, 1936, she married Mathias "Ty" Stermer in Kalamazoo. Together they owned and operated the Tylene Motel and Restaurant in Big Bay de Noc, MI. Charlene enjoyed many types of crafts and candy making, and was particularly fond of her pets. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ty, in 1970; her brothers Russell and John Larkin; her sisters Lorraine Stell, Kitty VanElst, and Marie Stozicki. Charlene is survived by several nieces and nephews, her birds Petey I and Petey II, and her dog, Sparky. She is also survived by Carol, Lou, and Linda, her loyal friends and neighbors whose care allowed Charlene to stay in her home all these years. A reception on the occasion of Charlene's 100th birthday will be held Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 2-4PM at Michelle's Restaurant, 677 Romence Rd. in Portage, MI.
